Active labor is typically defined as at least 6 cm dilation with strong, regular contractions.
During Labor
Fetal heart rate is monitored using a Doppler with intermittent monitoring.
You’re encouraged to eat and hydrate throughout labor.
Our cozy kitchenette and lounge offer filtered water, coffee, tea, light snacks, and include a refrigerator for your food and drinks.
Birth doulas are required for first-time natural birthing families. Doulas provide early and active labor support, ensuring continuous guidance and allowing your midwife team to arrive rested, focused, and ready for delivery.
Immediate Postpartum and Newborn Care
Once your baby is born, we honor the sacred mother-baby bonding period.
Your midwives will monitor both you and your baby closely and non-invasively while encouraging prolonged skin-to-skin contact.
At It’s Your Birth, true delayed cord clampingis our standard-typically waiting until after placenta delivery to ensure your baby receives their full volume of cord blood.
When you’re ready, your chosen support person may assist in cutting the cord under your midwife’s guidance.
Your midwife will examine you for any tears and offer suturing if needed.
A complete newborn exam follows, including vitals, measurements, reflexes, and weight.
Discharge
The birthing center is a short-term postpartum stay, averaging 2-3 hours after delivery. Before discharge, clients must meet specific criteria and have an installed infant car seat ready for transport.
We recommend that all families have their car seat checked by a certified safety technician before delivery.
Postpartum Care
Your postpartum schedule includes follow-up visits for both mother and baby at:
~ Day 1
~ Weeks 1, 2, 4, and 6
All visits are held at the birthing center. Your first visit is typically scheduled the day after birth, with timing determined by your delivery time and midwife availability.
Your midwives remain available by phone or through your client portal for questions during the first six weeks.
The Newborn Screening (NBS) is offered at your Day 1 visit and includes:
It’s Your Birth also offers the blood spot portion of the NBS through Revvity, a private laboratory option.

Early Labor
Home Birth Labor and Delivery
How our midwives support you through labor, birth, and the early hours with your baby.
Early Labor
For planned home births, early labor begins in the comfort of your own space. Your midwife stays in contact by phone or text to help you recognize active labor and know when it’s time for the birth team to arrive.
During Labor
When you are in active labor, your midwifery team will join you at home and bring all necessary equipment to guide and support you through birth. Fetal heart tones are monitored with a handheld Doppler at regular intervals, and you’re encouraged to eat, hydrate, and move as desired. Your doula or support person provides hands-on comfort and reassurance while your midwife focuses on your and your baby’s well-being.
Immediate Postpartum
After your baby is born, we honor the quiet, intimate moments that begin your new family’s story. Your midwife stays close by to monitor gently, encourage skin-to-skin contact, and support your baby’s first feeding. True delayed cord clamping is our standard, typically occurring after the placenta is delivered. When you’re ready, your chosen support person may cut the cord under your midwife’s guidance.
Your midwife will assess for tears and offer suturing if needed. A full newborn exam is completed bedside, including vitals, measurements, reflexes, and weight. While you bond with your baby, your team quietly tends to clean-up and ensures everyone is stable and comfortable before departure.
Postpartum Follow-Up
After your home birth, your postpartum visits for both mother and baby are held at the birth center within the first six weeks. Visits typically occur at Day 1 and Weeks 1, 2, 4, and 6, focusing on recovery, newborn growth, breastfeeding, and any questions new or experienced parents may have.
The newborn screening is offered at your Day 1 visit and includes metabolic, pulse-oximetry, and hearing screening. It’s Your Birth also offers the blood-spot portion through Revvity, a private lab option for families who prefer it.

Boy or Girl?
Know sooner than ever before with SneakPeek® Clinical Early Gender DNA Test. The only 99.9% accurate early gender DNA test, starting at 6 weeks into pregnancy.
SneakPeek Clinical by Gateway Genomics is the only clinically proven early gender DNA test that lets you discover your baby’s gender months ahead of schedule, so you can prepare for your little one and share with family and friends! The test uses non-invasive prenatal testing (NIPT) to look for male Y chromosomes from a small sample of your blood. If male Y chromosomes are found, that means baby is a boy. If none are found, baby is a girl. SneakPeek is the leading provider and most accurate early gender DNA test on the market.
